Day 3 - Grimsey Island
Grimsey
(Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈkrimsˌeiː])
The northernmost part of Iceland located in the Arctic Circle.
Home of one hundred people - and one million seabirds- the island stands alone far out on the horizon, a blue cliff, surrounded by the wide Arctic Ocean, about 40 km off the north coast of Iceland; it is about 5 square kilometers in area.
The islanders live in a small village by the harbor - a prosperous and fertile community with many children. The chorus of seabirds, never stops during the 24 hour long day - there is no night in Grimsey during the summer, not until late July when twilight begins to descend around midnight. - The birds nest in the high cliffs that surround the whole island, except by the harbor, and we will be visiting during the best time to view puffins! Some options while on the island are to walk around in the little village, drop by the Fiske-monument and read the sign-boards, visit the restaurant Krían (Arctic tern) and/or the smallest Café in Iceland at the Guesthouse Gullsól. Take a walk to the lighthouse at the island's southernmost point and walk along the south-west shore of the island and look at the beautiful basalt columns and old fishing huts. On that route one can find the "Century stones" which display the position of the arctic circle Anno 1717, 1817 and 1917.
We arrive to the island by ferry from Dalvik - which will be in itself an adventure!
